A Whimsical but Daring Question about a Possible Analogy between Thailand and Canada

The Redshirts Rebellion in Bangkok was a protest by the rural population against a government dominated by the Big City. It has lost.

Can it be argued that in Canada a similar movement has won?

  1. Absolutely not. I’ve been a member of the “rural population” for 27 of the last 38 years, and I’m hard put to think of one significant issue in respect of which “we” (the rural gang) have prevailed over the interests of the Big City. Indeed, if anything, that trend line is getting steeper.

    • If you, Fred, are a typical member of the “rural population” Michael Ignatieff is a man of the people.

  2. David Schatzky

It could be said that Stephen Harper has “won”. Does he represent the old Reform Party? Was the Reform Party a “rural gang”? If we say yes to both, then perhaps Eric’s whimsical question is reportage, not a flight of fancy…
