To help you make up your mind, the English consulting company Mercer has just released its annual Survey of Quality of Living. The first 20 of 221 cities are these:
Vienna
Geneva
Vancouver
Auckland
Düsseldorf
Frankfurt
Munich
Bern
Sydney
Copenhagen
Amsterdam
Ottawa
Brussels
Toronto
Berlin
Melbourne
Luxemburg
Stockholm
Perth
Montreal
Mercer conducts these rankings to help governments and multi-national companies compensate employees fairly when placing them on international assignments. The rankings are based on a point-scoring index, which sees Vienna score 108.6 and Baghdad 14.7. Cities are ranked against New York as the base city, with an index score of 100.
Please note that New York is NOT among the first twenty-two.
Eric Koch’s new book, The Weimar Triangle, is available at Indigo-Chapters and in your local bookstore.
What a dumb list. Only an actuary could think Vienna, Toronto and Bern more exciting than New York, London, Paris or Hong Kong.
True
You are familiar with the quality of living in both Frankfurt and Toronto. Are they truly as far apart as the list would have us believe?
The list comprised 221 cities. So Toronto and Frankfurt (twin cities, as a matter of fact) are actually quite close.
The list forgot Redondo Beach, California
Yes, they did.
I wonder how many people have actually been to Auckland?
Good question! I guess you must be an Auck to feel at home there.
