Friday’s Putative Guest List

So Tony Blair and George Brown are not invited. But one would hope that among those who will be coming are a few of the hundreds of royal or ex-royal descendants of the Jewish Baron von Meier, the “putative” biological father of Albert, Queen Victoria’s Prince Consort.

(This posting intends “putative” to mean “possible,” never mind that pedantic scholars deny such a possibility. The baron’s paternity was believable enough to be the subject of a scene in the play Victoria Regina by Laurence Housman. Mere facts have never stood in this blog’s way.)

It was thanks to Albert’s mother’s lover, Baron von Meier, that the desperately impoverished ducal family of Saxe-Coburg had enough to eat. A few years before the baron had arrived on the scene, the furniture in the castle was used as fuel to keep the inhabitants warm.

It goes without saying that the descendants of Jack the Ripper are invited. He was “putatively” Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale (1864–1892) and pictured here, the eldest son of the Prince of Wales who later became King Edward VII.

They might steal the show.

  1. What delicious gossip, Eric — have you ever considered a career in the tabloids?

  2. But why would they want to?

  3. Prince Albert Victor died before his marriage to Princess Mary von Teck who was then engaged to his younger brother.

So to state that ‘descendants’ of Albert Victor could be present is ludicrous and only goes to show your little knowledge on the subject.
