The Joy of Quoting Marshall McLuhan (1911–2011)

  • I don’t necessarily agree with everything I say.
  • I wouldn’t have seen it if I hadn’t believed it.
  • Jokes are grievances.
  • If the nineteenth century was the age of the editorial chair, ours is the century of the psychiatrist’s couch.
  • The name of a man is a numbing blow from which he never recovers.
  • Good taste is the first refuge of the non-creative. It is the last-ditch stand of the artist.
  • I think of art, at its most significant, as a DEW line, a Distant Early Warning system that can always be relied on to tell the old culture what is beginning to happen to it.
  • Ads are the cave art of the twentieth century.
  • Today it is not the classroom nor the classics which are the repositories of models of eloquence, but the ad agencies.
  • Mass transportation is doomed to failure in North America because a person’s car is the only place where he can be alone and think.
  • Money is a poor man’s credit card.
  • Affluence creates poverty.
  • Politics will eventually be replaced by imagery. The politician will be only too happy to abdicate in favour of his image, because the image will be much more powerful than he could ever be.
  • The modern Little Red Riding Hood, reared on singing commercials, has no objection to being eaten by the wolf.
  • There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We are all crew.
  • We drive into the future using only our rearview mirror.

  1. 1911 – 2011? Anyone with that life span deserves to be quoted.

  2. Imagine what he could have made of 24 hour news channels in our age of (apparent) freedom to have one’s own reality, not just hold one’s own opinion. White noise or fade to black?

    • He would have said those news channels are no different from any other television program. We watch television, never mind what’s on it.

  3. Mike Sky is not Anonymous! If I was I could claim credit (own?) a good share of civilization’s art and intellectual property.

    Cheers to All.

  4. Some of these sayings are really fantastic. I am really very impressed.

    • Good. It shows good taste. He was dazzling. I knew him slightly but whenever we met I think he believed I was somebody else. However, I am mentioned in a footnote of his published letters. In his day, he had great influence on all of us in the “media”.
