From an interview in Die Zeit (October 6) about Godard’s new movie, Film Socialism:
Q. In your film, your cruise ship takes you to Greece.
A. Yes, Greece has been very profitable to tourism. Everybody goes there. The Germans, the French, the British go there. They have ruined Greece, just as they have ruined Tunisia and other countries. That’s why I think we should pay some of the money back to Greece. There is a simple solution to the Greek debt crisis. Whenever a person uses the logic the ancient Greeks invented, that person should pay them ten euros. And whoever has the money but won’t pay up must give up the right to use that logic. That person will be forced to think differently….
One always forgets that the Greeks invented democracy as a social and political system at the same moment they invented tragedy. Today, each time we use the word “democracy” we should also say the word “tragedy.” And the other way round. Proof of this connection is what’s now happening in Greece. One talks about the tragedy of the Greek debt crises, but from the beginning there has been something tragic about the invention of democracy.
Q. What is tragic about democracy?
A. Just look at today’s news.

Eric Koch’s book, The Weimar Triangle, is available at Indigo-Chapters and in your local bookstore.
Another solution is for the Greek government to auction off a number of lesser islands to folks such as me and my friends. (This obviously includes all the Koch bloggers.)
The various individual islands would take on the sovereignty of the new owners, becoming independent nations. The owners can tax, make speeches from balconies, abuse the serfs and wear loud uniforms. Greece would have money and the island countries could join together, forming a Common Union. History repeating its self.
Good idea. But the trouble is, if we follow Godard, we would all have to think LOGICALLY!
On a more serious note, Stephen Roach, economist and vice chairman Morgan Stanley Asia, believes that the Euro failed because there was no fiscal policy underlyingg the euroro, ECb etc.
I agree.
I might settle on the island of Koch. Not a lot of money but I’d provide readings and other performances. I guess that doesn’t do much for the debt though.
You never know. Every little thing counts.
There is an island of Kos. I think I should be able to llve there tax-free.
