From the Post-Clinton Era to the Pre-Clinton Era

In her column in yesterday’s New York Times about Bill Clinton’s dazzling speech at the Democratic National Convention, Maureen Dowd suggests that after Obama’s second term Hillary Clinton may become president of the United States.

“It’s a transaction,” she concludes her column.

“Obama needs his Democratic predecessor to reassure jittery voters that the future can look like the past, with a lower deficit, plenty of jobs and the two parties actually talking. In return, Bill will have the capital to try to ensure that the past can look like the future, with Hillary as Obama’s successor.

“What a wild twist. Instead of ushering in the post-Clinton era, as intended, Obama has ushered in the pre-Clinton era.”

  1. The column was published Sept. 4 and can be seen here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/05/opinion/dowd-the-comeback-vegan.html?_r=1&ref=maureendowd
A relatively weak piece from a normally astute observer, IMHO. The reader comments which follow the article are revealing. Dowd is right that Obama needs Clinton, both the man and the myth, to get re-elected, but her vision of Hillary as Obama’s successor is a pipe-dream, IMHO. Hillary has said time and time again that she has no intention of going after the presidential nomination in 2016. I believe she means it.

  2. IMHO = In my humble (honest) opinion

  3. Seems that we have entered the VERY silly season.
