The Case for the U.N. General Assembly

On October 5, “Le Figaro” wrote:

“The benefits of this exceptional international forum are clear. The headquarters of the U.N., situated in Manhattan on the banks of the East River, is the only place on earth where all countries are given a say, with no regard for their importance, their wealth, their system of government, their degree of friendship or enmity with the United States. In the glass palace in New York, states benefit from absolute freedom of diplomatic expression. It is important that they make use of it, and continue to do so….

“Numerous wars have started in the past as a result of misunderstandings. With the years, the U.N. General Assembly has become the most efficient forum for clearing up misunderstandings between states. That’s not all that can be done to further the cause of peace in the world, but it’s a lot.”

    It is difficult to prove the value of an organization or group by what does not happen. However, here we have the example of the League of Nations.If President Woodrow Wilson had obtained that additional vote in the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. joined, what might not have happened?
