U.S. Grants Visa to New Indian PM

Narendra Modi was installed as the next prime minister of India after his party won in a landslide last Thursday. As a result, Modi will be granted a visa to the United States for the first time after being denied one in 2005, when deadly riots targeting Muslims in his state killed more than 1,000 people. He was the first person denied a visa under a U.S. law making officials responsible for “severe violations of religious freedom” ineligible.

A spokesperson for the State Department said it “looks forward to working closely with the prime minister and the cabinet to advance our strong bilateral partnership.”
