5 Responses to How Do We Become Politically Engaged?

  1. What do we know about the effectiveness of the various forms of political engagement? More particularly, do we know that publishing critical articles does more than comfort the already converted? “J’accuse” is surely not the norm, or is it?

Actually, writing letters to parliamentarian and copying the newspaper is very effective. The assumption is that one letter is worth the opinion of 1,000 people. There are also several new groups that have formed. Parliamentarians, if they don’t have strong idealogical ideas do listen to organized groups.

    • Especially organized groups with deep pockets and a propensity to buy parliamentarians, er, fund political campaigns. (Full disclosure: I have in mind primarily the US situation, and I’m feeling grumpy and cynical this morning.)

  3. I understand that the effectiveness of letters to politicians is greatly mitigated if they are the kind of duplicates so often provided to us by the more strident protest groups. Don’t do that. If it’s important enough to merit a letter, it’s important enough to be worth writing your own original.
